Communication in the Family
Hello. I am Claire Bennett. I am eleven, and I teach Junior Academy. Mrs. Hale is our headmistress, but this hour is mine. This is week 25. Today's lesson is Communication in the Family. Sit with me and we will learn it together. Look around this table. A family dinner is not only food. It is the weekly board meeting of a household. Someone has to listen, someone has to speak clearly, and someone has to keep the conversation from becoming a courtroom. James tells us to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. That is household leadership. Active listening is not waiting for your turn. It is giving your face, your questions, and your patience to another person. Expressing a need is not selfish. A girl who can say, 'I need help with Saturday,' or 'I felt left out when plans changed,' is practicing the same courage she will need as a roommate, a wife, a mother, or a manager. Tonight we will practice family meetings — short, kind, and useful — because peace is made on purpose.
